Well, he actually changed his allegiance when entering the Night's Watch but the theft should still be considered some kind of betrayal, as Lord Randyll goes on about how Sam has no right to Heartsbane during the family reunion dinner. -Lem Lemoncake

Clarifying the rule for newer players - we had some debates previously on how to determine when a drink is alcoholic/non-alcoholic. That debate was inconclusive on where the line should be drawn (even if events like this may be "obvious"). So we went with implementing the easiest and most entertaining black & white rule: EVERY drink is counted as alcoholic, unless explicitly shown not to be (e.g. S2E9 Hound "fuck the water, bring me wine") -nyan
