Gaining Samwell Tarly as a follower in the Citadel
submitted by as38 (rejected: seems to be a teacher (perhaps primary one), but Samwell may not follow him officially (and definitely does not in practice).)

There is a case for these points if Archmaester Marwyn is seen as representative for the Hightower Citadel and the Order of Maesters which Samwell has subjected himself to.
At the end of last season the receptionist stated that Samwell has to talk with the Archmaester about his entry into training. As Samwell is working for the Order at the beginning of this season, it is implied that the meeting with the Archmaester went well and that Samwell was accepted as a novice -Ser Vincent

Usually we don't count anything that has happened before the character was introduced, else you have a new character like Stannis showing up and instantly gaining lots of points from existing followers. This is a little grey area since we know Sam has a state change (also a promotion?), but Marwyn we've only seen this season. -nyan

Id think we would need more than implied for him to become a follower. Also Sam left that conversation and did exactly what Marwyn told him he couldnt do (get books from restricted section). -hindsight44

I would usually agree with your point nyan, however this is clearly part of sams story arc and archmaester is just a side character, it just so happens that sam is now under the wing and learning from the archmeaster in order to become a maester and help jon as he commanded, I dont think it should matter that it is a new character because it is a new setting for samwell in his journey -as38

Depends on what introduced means, the archmaester was mentioned last season before Samwell became part of the Order, and this season he was "on-screen" introduced basically at the same time/scene when Samwells state change is shown. In your example with Stannis, if other characters had been shown independently in season 1 and suddenly part of Stannis crew in season 2 when he is introduced on-screen, I do feel they should be counted as becoming follower (even when the "following" happens off-screen inbetween seasons and before Stannis is even introduced on-screen).
I see the problem more with Sam following the Order but not Marwyn as a person per se, but if Marwyn is the only head of the Order (which is not the case in the books but seemingly in the show) then the points may be valid -Ser Vincent

The ruling council of Maesters does appear to be a thing in the show, so I'm not sure we definitively say that Marwyn is the one and only Archmaester that Sam is learning under. http://gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/Conclave
However as a side point, definitely Sam seems to have been officially admitted into the the grad school life at the Citadel, which is a promotion from last season. I'll add that. -nyan
