In the rulebook for Kills.IV we have a rule for: "Pretty much any kind of strike on random extras is counted for a kill unless the extra is shown to be explicitly alive after. This is applied often for large battle scenes."

It's just a lot easier to count, else there are a lot of nitpicky debates that some strike is on a non-fatal region, or the shield bash didn't look strong enough, etc. -nyan

The scoring methodology is similar to ones previous used for mass-kill scenes like the Battle of Blackwater, and the Sept of Baelor explosion, and Drogon's previous fights. All visible bodies that are dying or dead from the particular kill method are counted up (not too much debate this episode, since there were no other fire-wielders). However no further assumptions or speculations are made that a larger group must've died.

For instance in this event, the two shots cover all the visible soldiers - while one may reasonably assume that there are more burned soldiers along the line that are not visible behind the fireball, we can't see them and therefore they won't contribute to the kill count. -nyan

If we don't see them burnt from a specific blast (and not repeat shots of the same blast - which you did an excellent job of not counting those, by the way), then I don't think we should count them -hkeseyan

Alright, here is the final resolution on this.

I see the problems caused by Daenerys' mega-event performance for the season-long Direct-Scoring leagues, and it seems unlikely that I'll convince most of these leagues to switch over into a new scoring format. To offer a pragmatic and generic solution specifically for these leagues, I've created a new Ruleset 5.0b, which is the same as Ruleset 5.0 except that it offers a per-episode point cap on character performance. Currently this cap has been hit only twice, with Daenerys getting a -143pt adjustment in E4 and Arya getting a -11 adjustment in E1.

You can preview these new scores on the Episode and League pages by appending the ?rulesetId=11 argument into the url. For example: http://fantasora.com/game/1/season/8/subunit/4?rulesetId=11

League Admins can switch the Ruleset at any time by visiting the Edit League page. I'd discuss this with the other players in your Leagues before unilaterally moving to it, but the choice is there for any League Admins.

In general, the counting methodology and Daenerys' points will remain as-is, which is that a classification of a body as "duplicate" will require some evidence that they are duplicates (unique insignia on the armor, or perhaps pinpointing exact locations). There is already a 100 point cap for raw scoring, and for the perspective of a head to head match, dany totaly deserve to win her match for a specific episode where she uses her dragons so 200 or 600 points doesn't make a difference, that's why she is ranked #1 for the draft. For this season it'll stay where it is, out of consistency/fairness. But as we approach the endgame of the show, where we may be getting a dragon-roasting every episode or in the majority of episodes, it does become more of a balance issue.

Some of it may take care of itself, as the dragons are now split off to competing allegiances (Viserion for the Night King, and other characters can steal the dragon points if they become a rider). But at most we still end up with 3 characters dominating the field. The dragons themselves could also be made individually draftable.

For Roto this problem takes care of itself - you can spend your likely first round pick on a dragon character, who might instantly put you top 3 in the Kills category, but will give you nothing else but that stat (a common tradeoff, and typically an inefficient one). For the other leagues, perhaps we may consider some alternative drafting options that will make them cost a fairer value (allow draft pick trading, or implement auction/salary cap leagues). Or perhaps a league may selectively ban certain characters from the draft list, or choose their own league-specific nerfs (e.g. all points from this OP character list will be halved or even 1/10th'd). Part of the problem is that people have an assessment that the dragons are somewhere between mildly to extremely OP, and it's hard to come up with a way to compensate for that without pinning the value, so for the site I think everyone will be more satisfied if the leagues/players have the options to set that nerfing value for themselves.

Doing the point cap thing, or coming up with an arbitrary fractional kill is my least preferred option, mostly from a stat-keeping purity standpoint. -nyan

I think everyone is missing the point here about the dragon kill. This is fantasy Game of Thrones, we are never going to accurately score each character for how much impact they truly have on the show. 1) because this is fantasy and we have to have rigid rules to score points for events instead of retroactively assigning point values to things and 2) because impact is subjective and we will never fully agree on who has more impact

The thing everyone who is complaining about points that characters deserve for certain events is sorely missing is that in fantasy we need to settle on points awarded for certain events and then the players play the game around that. Everyone knew ahead of time that killing a dragon would be 10 points. Everyone knew that drinking wine is 5 points and full frontal nudity is 20. Everyone knew that killing 5 random characters is the same as killing 1 named character no matter how tough or important they are. Playing fantasy Game of Thrones is a skill in and of itself, and whoever pays the most attention to those specific rules should be rewarded. If you drafted the Night King because you thought he is ultimately more powerful than someone like Jaime who has one hand, you made a terrible mistake by overlooking the fact that Jaime can drink, have sex, say good lines, rack up specials, have more screen time, while the Night King rarely does killing with his own hands, doesn't talk, have sex, or drink.

It is Nathan's job as the runner of this site to ensure that 1) the game is competitive and fair within its intended scope and 2) points are being counted for what they were implied to be counted for when people drafted their characters. You can say killing a dragon is more of a power than Sam reading 4 books but the fact remains that drafting the Night King with the hopes that a dragon kill would win your season was a bad fantasy move. -hkeseyan

Where our discussions about points should happen is in events where there is ambiguity or a dispute in whether or not something satisfies a condition for awarding points on an event. What hkeseyan said <3 and I'd like to add that exactely this, for me personally at least, is what brings the fun into this: the seeming arbitrariness. That Doran Martell can have his one episode in which he does a few steps on his own to prove a point then die and score hugely for that single episode but never before or after. This is also one of the reasons why I now prefer H2H to Roto. I have Dany in my team and obviously have the by far highest overall scoring. Also I thought Harrag was killed off in this one, but according to the wiki he was simply "beaten senseless" but there's no citation on that. I think we're free to make our own interpretation. Yeah, for this it basically becomes a judgment call we can make. This fight happens on Dragonstone I believe, so Harrag isn't completely stranded. I also think that it's also not in Theon's character to straight up kill a guy just to take away his crew.

I will admit that I did not play in the league last year but just like the rule about brokering a deal that you must be a third party this seems to fall under the same logic.

Overruling doesn't apply to a second party who is the target of the discussion.

Daenerys is the second party and the target of the discussion. The Greyjoys, Tyrells, and Dornish are trying to convince her and her army to do something not a third party. Yes and i believe Daenerys and her army are the target of the decision. My argument was constructed around the logic behind the reasoning for brokering a deal role. Which was designed so characters like vayrs and little finger can get points but not characters like Jon Snow and Daenerys since they will allready be getting points when the actual event occurs e.g. (when Daenerys actually follows through with the attack on Casterly Rock and King's Landing) -ssantise

Hmmm @ssantise you make a fair point. I suppose a rules rewording may be in order, to better get behind the spirit of the idea: if Joffrey orders Ned to be executed, and everybody is onboard with it except for Ned who obviously is not, it's not a very politically tough decision - there is nobody Joffrey had to convince or overrule to carry it out. Here Daenerys has credible resistance to her decision, and she either has to convince or intimidate her allies into obeying. I suppose in the Joffrey case, the thing about Ned's opposition that doesn't matter is not that he's the 2nd party, but that as a prisoner he doesn't have any political power that would matter in the decision. -nyan

Battle of the Bastards did result in Battle Victory points for Ramsay (http://fantasora.com/event/2892). In the rulebook it states that large battles can be divided up and have multiple victory points awarded for each segment. Is anyone else upset with how LF went out? Until this season LF had the most unpredictable plans and was always smart enough to have someone else do the dirty work for him. This season his scheme was in your face and obvious. He always played 4 dimensional chess and this season it was 1 dimensional. Also say what you want about him but LF wouldnt beg for his life. He was willing to fight and die against Brandon Stark and also advised to risk everything because life is fleeting. I never really cared about how the show differs from the book as long as the characters stay the same. I really feel like this was a misrepresentation of LF. -hindsight44

I feel like they dragged his death on for so long - he was basically kept as a laying duck all season while we knew his demise was coming. He did practically nothing with the extra time he was given to live (all the failed whispering in Sansa's ear was so bad, I'd rather have LF killed off earlier than see him like that). Similar situation with Varys except they haven't built an entire plotline in a major location around his demise -hkeseyan

Definitely, Littlefinger was always the most dangerous man in Westeros, I imagined his demise would see him get all the way to the pinnacle of power, and only then to get backstabbed by Sansa.

I'd have a hard time writing a good S7 storyline for Littlefinger though. I think they put themselves into a corner by showing Sansa was through with him and saw everything. In my fantasy storyline, Sansa is the only Stark who sees a reedeming quality in Baelish, and goes along with his schemes against the better advice of all her family and followers. And then at the pinnacle do we find out that Sansa was the one playing an even longer game, and perhaps she can actually be as selfishly power-thirsty as Arya accuses her. It'd be awesome if we had one Stark who was questionably a villain, and not all goody-goodies. -nyan

Isn't Arya the villain Stark? I know that the series tries to make her somewhat sympathetic every now and then, that she is still the little Arya girl, but she actually went full blown egomaniac, sociopath and serial killer since she left King's Landing - which is even comprehensible considering her experiences and possible traumas. -Lem Lemoncake
