I think the scoring criteria should purely go off of what happened in the show. It's truer to what the characters actually accomplished. The existence of the character on the draft list is simply based on pre-season rumors, and this one turned out to be insignificant.

I also don't want to start weighing whether or not characters will be countable towards named kills in the pre-season, when I'm just scouring all the casting lists to give players all the options to draft from. -nyan

You referenced Tyrion's scar which is tiny compared to that of a burn victim. So even if we made the criteria: Tyrion's scar or larger, I think we would still see quite a few injuries that might have otherwise been considered minor now being considered major.

Also real life burn victims don't have access to the medical ointments that Samwell is applying to Jorah, for all we know Jorah could come out of this looking like nothing happened. And I can assure you if that's the case I will definitely be arguing for these points to be removed retroactively. -ssantise

@ssantise admittedly they've minimized Tyrion's scar in subsequent seasons. If you recall back to S2 they made a big thing about having bandaged up his entire face and was worried that Shae wouldn't love him anymore. I do think that if Tyrion recovers from the battle, has a cosmetic scar but they don't really make a big thing about it, it wouldn't be a major injury. -nyan

It feels incredibly unfair to not count the deaths as kills. Those 7 Wights died as a result of a combat situation, the kills need to be attributed. The surrender analogy does not work, in a normal situation the surrendering soldiers would be taken captive because they are alive and still functioning. In this scenario the wights couldn't be captured because they were destroyed due to Jon's actions, the wight they DID capture can more accurately be seen as a surrender. If anything, this resembles an execution of prisoners, where Jon passed the judgement and swung the sword.

Also I agree that it is unfair to remove the points after a week, where no new arguments were brought up to strengthen the case for removal. -brandonthebigB

When soldiers surrender you have gained an asset or at the very least levrage. There is a specific advantage to gaining surrendered soldiers that is not at play here. They were once functional wights that would kill any living thing and now theyre nothing. The rules state that kills are counted regardless of reason. Jon Snows actions directly led those 7 wights dying........again -hindsight44

Yeah the delay in scoring update is my bad, I've ended up on another spotty-internet week during travel for this one and wasn't able to do these earlier. The summer run for S7 has really caused some conflicts with travel, I'll have to figure out the S8 schedule much better.

I think you guys are right from a scorekeeping purity standpoint. The wights went from soldiers to being dead because of this action, to call it a surrender can work as a stretch but yes, it is a stretch we'd be making to find a way to discount the points. I started thinking about parallel examples, with a very basic kill switch action that causes large numbers of deaths. You might say Bronn igniting the Blackwater Bay wildfire, or a hypothetical Qyburn's little bird igniting the wildfire underneath the Sept of Baelor, and I think most players would readily accept those as valid scores.

Giving it some further thought, I did have that same first impression of "cheapness" as most of the others who initially commented. I think that comes from having such a directly comparable set of kills in the exact same scene - the Hound, Tormund, Jorah, et. al. are busy hacking away at the wights for their measly 1-2 kills each, and then Jon swoops in with an easy 7-kill swing. But it can be fine that some kills are cheaper than others, and while a jackpot scenario may exist in the future with whoever takes down the Night King, it's a much more equitable free-for-all for any character to achieve, unlike say Daenerys' dragon roastings.

Perhaps with better per-league tools, we can again have multiple rulesets for S8 that could include or exclude the wight-follower kills.

Anyhow for this one, I'll go back to the original decision which is to count the 7 as kills. -nyan

I think we'll keep the criteria for "boss fight", which is the character being featured in a battle scene being a badass and/or owning the other extras. Daenerys does get points for "Fire and Blood", but it does need to include both of them. It is a little loose here, the operative words are "winter"and "coming", and slight variations of it, but as long as those two words are together I think it's okay to count (but if everyone feels strongly about strict wording, we can stick to that). I do think the wording in both lines was chosen specifically to echo the Stark words.

I don't see much difference between "winter has come" and "winter came", in terms of how well it sticks to the wording - it would be both or none. The House Words scoring is just for dropping the lines, there's no need for them to be quality/impactful lines unlike the Insults category. -nyan

I don't know, Stannis just said in passing "I know what dragonglass is, we have it in Dragonstone", but he didn't say how much or where to get it. Plus I think it's easy to forget things that are said in passing like that. Especially since he had that whole traumatic incident with Gilly later on. The maesters' book actually spelled out exactly where it is in the mine, and how much and gave a ton of info on how it can be used. @ssantise I would not necessarily hold that followers and decisions are intertwined. Samwell is not directly a follower of the Archmaester, however the Archmaester is still making Citadel-wide rules for all Maesters (and Maesters-in-training), which Samwell must obey as part of the order. Just like a student is not necesarily a follower of a principal, but the principal can still make school-wide decisions that affect all the students. -nyan

I don't like the idea of tweaking the rulebook constantly so that everyone can get as many points of possible. I think its important to have a concrete set of rules that we can all rely on. I agree that there must be room for changes as the show evolves but I feel there should be a bit more formality around making substantial changes to the rulebook. -ssantise

@ssantise and @hkeseyan, basically you are both on the sides that I'm trying to balance when refining the scorekeeping. As @ssantise says, for consistency and fairness, the rules shouldn't change drastically. And definitely not for reasons like "we want there to be as many scores as possible". But as @hkeseyan and I'm sure lots of people realized, there are lots of areas to improve on the scoring rules, and that's especially true since the original rules were just what I could think of on my own when I started the game - each year lots of players are bringing in new ideas and are continually making the game better, and we still haven't quite reached the point where everything if fully stabilized.

For this convincing argument case, I think @hkeseyan gets at a better spirit of the rules for scoring, which isn't strictly about the decision by a character being reversed, but simply a character effectively convincing another to go with their plan of action (but with some real effort needed to convince, not simply "Hey man you wanna kill some Lannisters? Sure let's do it.").

In hindsight it was a mistake on my part to word it concretely around a decision being already made - I had been thinking too narrowly about examples like Robert and his Small Council, and it doesn't cover things like a brooding, indecisive Jon even though that was the intention.

So given that, I'll change that rulebook line to the following:

A character can be "convinced" only after they had initially decided in the opposite decision, or shown some resistance or indecision to the arguments.

Definitely it's not taken lightly and I understand each of these changes affects the scoring expectations negatively. For the most part I hope all of these tweaks are getting closer in line with the spirit of what deserves scoring. And I believe, is not inconsistent with what we've scored before (if anyone is finding examples of rejected scores because a character was simply indecisive vs. fully decided in the opposite direction, let me know. But otherwise I think this is the first time it's come up.) -nyan

Edd Tolett got points last year as Interim LC. Sansa is Interim Warden of the North. Also these positions do exist in government. If the president is incapactated the Vice President takes over till the president can resume his office.

I would like to argue this is not gaining a new follower. Arya already knew Brienne had sworn her sword to her as we knew with the fight for the Hound. After she defeated the Hound Arya had to hide from Brienne because she was do dedicated to serving Arya.

Compare this to when Arya met with Nymeria this season. Nymeria showed zero interest in following Arya and decided to take her own path. Yet Arya still got points for a new army points. Even though Nymeria has shown she considers herself independent. This set the precedent that the follower/ followee relationship is set regardless of the followee wants the help of the follower. In short its not right that Nymeria is follower of Arya even though Nymeria rejected Arya and that Brienne isnt a follower of Arya because Arya rejected her. By the precedent set by the show Brienne has been a follower of Arya since her encounter with the Hound not this episode. If anythinf Arya is now Briennes follower in the sense that Arya wants to learn from Brienne how to fight. -hindsight44

Clarification for Nymeria - it was Nymeria who acquired the "new army" of wolves, however all of these points transferred to Arya only because of her special ability which is that she gets points for anything Nymeria does. If Nymeria and Arya were separately draftable characters, Nymeria would have gotten the new army points and Arya would have gotten zero points for that scene.

If a character rejects a follower/title/castle/etc, it will not count. For example in S7E3 when Bran rejected Sansa naming him Lord of Winterfell. While Brienne made the pledge earlier and tried to assert it in the battle with the Hound, this is the first moment when Arya actually accepts that servitude. -nyan

Moved into submissions! Generally I'm with you guys that the bar should be higher, but I've also been lowering it a bit since the general consensus each week seems to be that I judge the lines too harshly and am always omitting submissions. So I'll take any opportunity to uncount a line ?.

I will say that I think the overall quality of lines in the show has dropped considerably ever since they ran out of book material (S4 or 5). So accepting some worse lines may end up being necessity as the typical Game-of-Thronesey insult line becomes tamer. -nyan

I absolutely do not think that Arya should lose her Nymeria special @nathan. I would be fine with Arya adding Jaqen's old special additionally, many characters have multiple specials. I could maybe see a debate to replace the hitlist with this.

@talindsey you can argue for any character you like to get a new special, just start a new event. Your not gonna get anywhere trying to get other characters specials changed within the comments of separate character. But you don't count major wounds being inflicted in the act of killing. One gaze per reasonable amount of time would make sense? That way if there's a really long group scene and he might be able to get 2-3 significant gazes in there, but glancing away and then back to her shouldn't count as multiple gazes. It was badass, but I assume they're gonna do it in every fight, which would include some automatism as well? I liked the part where Beric lit up his sword to burn out Thoros' wound - if I understood that correctly :D So maybe a special would be points for every time lighting up a sword for non-fighting purposes. However, I have no idea if this will ever happen again.
